Capitol Hill United Ministries From Capitol Hill United Ministries:
Is there Room in the Inn? During this season of Reflection we ask these questions of ourselves, “Are our hearts open to those in our communities that we deem “different?” Are we truly willing to offer an open and hospitable smile and hear another’s journey? Please join the members of Capitol Hill United Ministries (CHUM) on Sunday, March 21st @ 2:00 PM for a discussion with transgender people. “Call Me Malcolm” is an amazing story of the human spirit and God's spirit, and the liberating struggle to realize and express with confidence the marvelous gift of one's truest sense of self. “Call Me Malcolm” offers us a glimpse into the real lives of real people who are transgender. Malcolm helps us make connections to our own stories, encouraging us to share them. That can seem daunting in a culture which has done more to heap shame on persons who identify as transgender. The good news of Malcolm's story is the way in which shame and fear are overcome by grace, compassion and knowledge. Viewers cannot help but come to a deeper understanding of faith, love, and gender identity, and by doing so, arrive at a deeper understanding of their own journey
Together we will watch the movie, “Call me Malcolm” and participate in an honest and interesting community discussion with Malcolm and the stories of our own heart. Rev. Malcolm Himschoot is a nationally-recognized speaker on gender diversity and justice issues and a co-convener of the new Transgender Caucus within the United Church of Christ. An ordained minister, he has served as a pastor in parish and community ministry settings, as an invited guest preacher nationwide, as a mentor and instructor for clergy continuing education, and as an international advisor with the World Council of Churches Human Sexuality Reference Group. His essays have been published in The Progressive Christian and in Prism: A Theological Journal, and will soon appear in two new anthologies, Letters to My Brothers and Beyond Apologetics. - Malcolm
